Old permanent makeup rarely disappears politely. It fades into grey shadows, warms into orange, or blurs beyond its original shape - and the right way out depends on which of those has happened to you.
WHY OLD PMU CHANGES COLOUR
Pigments are blends. As the skin breaks the blend down over years, the components fade at different speeds - which is why old black-based brows drift towards blue-grey while older warm blends drift orange or salmon. The shape can also spread slightly as pigment migrates in the skin.
ROUTE ONE: LASER REMOVAL
Laser removal shatters pigment particles with light so the body can carry them away. It is highly effective on dark, carbon-based pigments - the blue-grey brows respond especially well. It typically needs a course of short sessions spaced weeks apart, and some warm pigments can darken before they lift, which is why an experienced assessment matters before the first pass.
ROUTE TWO: PIGMENT WIPER
Pigment wiper (saline-based removal) works differently: the area is opened as it was when the pigment went in, and an osmotic solution draws pigment up and out as the skin heals. It does not care what colour the pigment is, which makes it the route of choice for the warm tones and pale correction pigments laser struggles with, and for small targeted areas of a brow rather than the whole shape.
- Blue-grey, dark, carbon-based old work: laser is usually fastest.
- Orange, salmon, white or flesh-tone pigments: pigment wiper.
- Small area or partial lift before new work: pigment wiper.
- Deep, saturated old tattoo-grade work: often a combination of both.
REMOVAL IS A JOURNEY, NOT AN APPOINTMENT
Either route takes patience: sessions, healing windows and honest reviews along the way. But the reward is real - a clean or near-clean canvas on which new work can finally sit the way it should. In many cases we do not need full removal at all, just enough lightening for a fresh design to cover confidently.
